Dr Scott Semple

University of Edinburgh

Scott has worked in Magnetic Resonance Imaging research since 1996, awarded a PhD in cardiac MRI in 2001 at the University of Aberdeen. Scott continued to design, implement and manage novel imaging research in cardiac and oncology imaging in Aberdeen before returning to the University of Edinburgh in 2008 to set up the cardiac MRI research group in the Clinical Research Imaging Centre where he is the Deputy Director of the facility. Now part of the Edinburgh Imaging group, Scott continues to specialise in novel clinical imaging research using a combination of MRI, PET and CT scanning, and has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles in this field. A particular interest in novel MRI contrast agents has led Scott to develop new clinical applications in cardiovascular inflammation and viability.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging of myocardial viability

Use of manganese-based contrast agents in cardiac magnetic resonance imaging allows direct visualisation of myocardial viability in a range of cardiomyopathies. Uptake of these agents in the heart is mediated by voltage-gated calcium channels. This seminar will describe the application of these agents in cardiac imaging in patients and potential use in assessing heart failure progression and potential for use in the development of novel therapies.
