Technological advances must be built on a foundation of reliable measurement to succeed, for example in the field of medical imaging to detect key diseases and the delivery of more effective cancer treatments.

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is the UK`s National Measurement Institute, providing the measurement capability that underpins the UK's prosperity and quality of life. NPL has contributed to advancements in medical imaging in several disciplines over many years. At this year`s event NPL will be showcasing a range of technologies to highlight the role that NPL has played in the development and exploitation of medical imaging for disease diagnostics and treatment.

The medical physics group and other scientific teams at NPL encourage and contribute to accelerated implementation of new medical technologies in the clinic via collaborative research, commissioning support, independent audit, measurement and calibration of instrumentation. NPL`s work is helping to drive the impact and competitiveness of UK medical imaging companies by carrying out measurement research to develop new capabilities in response to productivity challenges.

Examples of the work that will be part of the NPL`s stand at Medical Imaging convention for 2020 include:

• NPL is helping to shape the future of breast imaging for disease diagnosis by pioneering a new form of ultrasound imaging with the potential to transform breast cancer outcomes, especially for younger women. The method offers a safer alternative to X-rays, eliminates the need for compression, and has the potential to produce more accurate images than traditional methods with fewer false positives.

• Through collaboration with industry, university researchers and the NHS, and supported by BEIS / ISCF funding, NPL was selected to lead the development of a Medical Imaging Accelerator for industry and we are working closely with UK businesses of all sizes in the medical imaging and diagnosis sectors, to help deliver solutions across the healthcare supply chain

o Examples of our work with SME`s to help develop new technologies include the work NPL has done with Lightpoint Medical to test a miniaturised intra-operative cancer detection probe, which allows accurate removal of cancer cells in a single operation. Using NPL's radiation test facilities, Lightpoint performed feasibility studies of the technology and verification of the probe against standard models. The work was recognised with the award of The Engineer`s collaborate to innovate award in their Health and Medical category.

Based in Teddington, south-west London, NPL employs over 600 scientists. NPL also has regional bases across the UK, including at the University of Surrey, the University of Strathclyde, the University of Cambridge and the University of Huddersfield's 3M Buckley Innovation Centre.
