Samar Betmouni

Dr Samar Betmouni

Consultant Neuropathologist, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS FT

Dr Betmouni a Neuropathologist with diagnostic and research experience at a number of NHS Trusts and Higher Education Institutions in the UK. Her area of interest is digital health technologies and how best to facilitate their sustainable adoption in clinical practice. Driving innovation in health requires collaboration between academics, healthcare professionals, healthcare users and industry - this is something that Dr Betmouni champions.

Dr Betmouni's focus at the moment is the effective implementation of digital pathology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) into clinical diagnostic practice. This has the potential to address the demand-capacity mismatch currently faced by histopathology services. It is also important to support the delivery of equitable diagnostic services to all of our patients. The widespread digital pathology implementation and connection of services is important to realise the potential of this technology to improve diagnostic services through emerging AI tools.

The implementation of digital pathology and AI will need to be done in a way to ensure that digital pathology resources are available equitably to all of our patients, and that AI deployment is ethically informed so that it does not contribute to exacerbation of health inequalities. Good design can also contribute to more effective and sustainable integration of technology and innovation into diagnostic workflows.
