Keele University, Cannock Hospital
Alison Hall trained in diagnostic ultrasound in 1996, specialising in musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound in 2002. In 2008 she joined Keele University in a new post as a consultant sonographer/research fellow.
The post is a collaborative one between Cannock Chase Hospital and Arthritis Research UK Primary Care Centre and her role is to provide a link between clinical practice and research in the field of MSK ultrasound.
This post has enabled the Trust to develop a specialised rheumatology ultrasound service and the university to facilitate research in areas using ultrasound for diagnostics and to guide interventions.
Alison still has significant clinical commitment to MSK ultrasound both in diagnostics and in ultrasound guided joint injections and has clinics at NHS departments and privately.
She runs national study days, is an independent clinical trainer and a regular speaker both nationally and internationally.
She is founder and chair of the Musculoskeletal Sonographer SIG and member of council at BMUS.
Ultrasound guided corticosteroid injections in Musculoskeletal disease – the development of a Sonographer-led service
Corticosteroid injection therapy is still of great importance in the management of musculoskeletal disease. Most are delivered using anatomical landmarks to determine the correct site but in recent years the use of imaging has been proven to increase accuracy.
Ultrasonography is now recognised as one of the most useful imaging modalities for this but there is still conflicting evidence around expected improvements in patient outcomes.
This presentation will explore current research on the efficacy of USGI and describe the development of a Sonographer-led guided injection service.
