City, Sandwell & Walsall Breast Screening Service (CSWBSS)
I am a mammographer and I extended my role in 2001 to do Health Promotion for Dudley breast screening service. While studying for my BSC (Hons) in Health Science, for the “Inequalities in health” module I chose “making breast screening more accessible for women with a learning disability”. This module led to my Learning Disability Project which won “ The Best of the Best Award “ at the Birmingham & Black Country Strategic Health Awards (2005)& in 2007 The Society of Radiographers awarded me the UK Radiographer of Year.
I continually strive to improve the “inequalities in health” that exist, utilising the concept that pictures speak a thousand words. I have improved informed choice and uptake by sending a GP endorsed appointment reminder letter (bilingual were indicated).Nationally I hope this work may influence the programme to include easy read / pictorial information alongside the standard literature sent.
Addressing the nationally declining breast screening uptake trend
In the last ten years the NHS breast screening programme uptake has fallen from 74% to 70.5%.
The uptake challenges faced by services includes an increasing population size, deprivation and language barriers; for this national resources are very limited.
CSWBSS faces all these challenges and we have developed initiatives that have improved the uptake in many of our deprived areas, even with sample sizes > 7,000.
