Dr Ai Lyn Tan
NIHR Leeds Biomedical Research Centre, Chapel Allerton Hospital, and University of Leeds
Dr Tan is an Associate Professor at the Leeds Institute of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Diseases at the University of Leeds and the NIHR Leeds Biomedical Research Centre, and a Consultant Rheumatologist at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Her specialist area is on using high-resolution MRI and ultrasound in understanding pathogenesis of arthritis. She leads the muscle imaging research programme developing novel imaging techniques using quantitative MRI and ultrasound shear wave elastography in studying the impact of rheumatic diseases on muscles.
A graduate from University College Cork, she has been in academic rheumatology in Leeds since 2001, and has been awarded Young Investigator Awards from the British Society for Rheumatology and the Asia Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology.
Dr Tan is an active member of the medical community on twitter, where she shares medical and scientific knowledge, and promote physical activity for health.
How imaging has enhanced knowledge about rheumatic diseases
The presentation will highlight the use of MRI and ultrasound as a research tool in improving the understanding of the pathogenesis of arthritides including inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis, and osteoarthritis. Introduction to how imaging using quantitative MRI techniques and ultrasound shear wave elastography can be used to explore the impact of rheumatic diseases on muscles.
